Back in 2005 a few technology experts got together and launched a website where anyone could upload a video and share it. Youtube.com was born.

After just 18 months, Google thought this idea had so much potential it bought YouTube. And although Google have found it hard to make money out of the service, it has never looked back.

This month – to coincide with Youtube’s 5th birthday – the company released a load of interesting facts about the service. The most amazing is that YouTube currently generates 2 billion views per day. That number is quite incredible. Its like one in four of every person on the planet watching a video on YouTube every single day. To put that into TV-context, it has “nearly double the prime-time audience of all three major US television networks combined”.

YouTube only passed 1bn views back in October 2009. So its doubled since then.

Here are some other interesting facts released by YouTube.

Here are the site’s most current stats:

15: Average number of minutes people spend on Youtube every day
24: Number of Hours of video uploaded to YouTube each minute
45 Million: Number of impressions the homepage generates each day
1700: The number of years it would take you to watch all the video on YouTube

Here’s a few facts from YouTube’s history:

This is the first video uploaded to the website in April 2005
The first website to reach 1 million views is this Ronaldinho video in July 2006

The top 5 most view videos are

Lady Gaga Bad Romance 196,115,524 views
Charlie bit my finger 185,714,255 views
Evolution of Dance 142,679,738 views
Miley Cyrus – 7 Things 117,413,641 views
Pitbull – I Know You Want Me 118,410,161 views

As we’ve mentioned before, having video on your website is a great way to engage with your visitors and keep them interested. Here’s a video tutorial on how to put YouTube videos on your website.

I must ‘fess up and say that most of these millions of hits per day on YouTube are actually me getting my daily fix of Armstrong and Miller’s hoodie airmen….or the Gay Bar drawing room sketch….or watching the hundreds of Downfall parodies…..
