Can you savour the Tweet smell of success?

As you are by now probably sick of hearing, the latest release from website maker WebEden allows you integrate your WebEden website with both Facebook and Twitter. This allows you to update both Facebook and Twitter from your WebEden site, and also invite people in your social networks to become a ‘member’ of your WebEden website.

And with the HTML widget, you can also display your Tweets on your WebEden site too.

Also, we have spoken elsewhere in this blog about good Twittering tools that help to drive traffic, and ultimately sales on your website.

But can you really measure the effects of all this social stuff?

Well, to start with, you can use Google Analytics or other link tracking tools to measure how many clicks and sales you make from the links you post in Twitter. (If you’re interested in finding out how to add Google Analytics to your website, then please let us know using the comments box below.)

Dell proudly announced recently that they had made more than $3m of sales from links that they placed in Tweets. The Dell account @delloutlet has over 600k followers, and whenever they have a good offer they Tweet a link to it. Dell reckoned that the people clicking on these links have bought more than $3m worth of PCs from them.

But many others are saying that the development of a social community around your product or service cannot be directly tracked to a boost in the bottom line. Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter should be about listening to customers, interacting with them on an informal basis, and finding out how they want your product to change and develop. It should also be about supporting customer needs, and communicating with them in a way they want to be communicated with.

Because all this touchy-feely interaction should ultimately lead to a recommendation and a good review. It’s that word of mouth stuff that is the jewel in the marketing crown. It just so happens that it is the most immeasurable thing too.

And maybe there is a flaw too in even trying to attribute the bottom line benefits to your social networks. It could be argued that in the example above everyone who was following Dell would have probably bought from them anyway, its just that they happened to click on the Twitter link. In fact, maybe they were going to buy a full price Dell but were lucky enough to get the same product for less because they saw the Twitter post.

    Ah Twitter again!

    What do you think of the #moonfruit fever that swept the Twitter world recently. I think I might be one of the few people who had a scooby who moonfruit were before the competition started – and I still never won a mac-book *sigh*

    Twitter is good for immediate response but some businesses haven’t quite got the hang of it yet. Webeden has got the right idea on how to maximise the potential for revenue for selling websites. However, lots of businesses don’t yet link back to their website, or to a blog or Sale space!

    When does the webeden competition get underway on Twitter then?!

    Ah ha! The WebEden Twitter competition! We’ve been mulling this over in the office, but don’t want to be a ‘me too’. Nor do we want to be accused of spamming Twitter.

    Do you think it would be a good idea to induce people to Tweet about us by entering them into a competition?

    And what would make a good prize?

    What is the goal of the competition? Is it just to raise your profile as a free website building resource. If so, could you cope with the increased business with the existing staff numbers ;-)

    Moonfruit’s competition was good fun – but did it bring them more business? Longterm? If it does, and I’m sure as a fellow ‘brother in software’ you could find out, it might be worth considering.

    But it was what, 7 macbooks in 5 days or something – that’s a lot of money to shell out in prizes!!!

    Don’t get me wrong, I’d love a new macbook, so yes, offer them as prizes/. However, maybe the offer of a fully-serviced website for 12 months, built by your experts might attract REAL entries. A smaller number, but perhaps a more truly interested crowd?

    Can those who take part have their twitter details ‘harvested’ and followed by webeden? Maybe the competition could be open to new followers only? Not just people who #webeden?!

    What do you think yourself, Ken? What would be the goal of the competition for your business?

    Hmmmmm. Interesting thoughts.

    I think that the aim of the competition would be:

    *to raise awareness of the WebEden brand (long term)
    *to drive traffic to the site (short term)

    Of prospective customers we have:

    *those people who are considering building a website now
    *those people who will consider building a website in the future
    *those people who will never build a website

    A well run competition might initially convert a few of those people looking to do it right now, and would hopefully lodge in the back of the mind of those planning in the future. (oh yes, what was that company who said I could build my own website?…)

    The Twitterers who responded could be followed, but I suppose the most uesful thing would be for them to follow us.

    Actually, maybe that’s it. We run a competition where we say that anyone who is following us will get entered into the competition. That we don’t spam Twitter, but we build interested followers anyway?

    Mind you, I’m not sure you would get the recommendations that an actual Tweet would bring.

    Actually your idea of people gettings a fully-functioning, professionally designed website, free for a year would attract those who really wanted one. And if they didn’t win, they might well have a go at building one themselves?

    The only thing is, I’m not sure that would be very ‘big’ because the prize is so niche.

    Yes the prize would be aimed at a small number of people, but, frankly, would you rather hand out a macbook to some random person who just happened to #webeden at a fortuitous time?

    Who amongst us has not looked at the odd lottery winner and thought – that money’s just going to waste?! So, imo, aiming at a niche market isn’t a bad thing. Yes, smaller, but more targetted.

    You could use twitter to find a new strap line or some snappy advertising line? New logo for a new strand of the webeden business empire? Best 140 character submission could win a website?

    Of course, part of the terms and conditions would be that you would be free to use any of the submissions at a later date – and offer some kind of runner up prize that could be issued at that later date?!

    There are lots of experts on Twitter – it’s just a question of how to best utilise their various bits of expertise in the area where you need some input? And all it need cost you is a website :-)

    We’re planning on doing some advertising where we promote a customer site, to show what can be done with the software. Tweet ‘webeden’ to be showcased?
