Softwate Update Video Tutorials

In the last tutorial we looked at how to buy a domain name using webeden.co.uk. You’ve probably bought a domain name so it can replace the yourname.webeden.co.uk website address that we gave you. This tutorial – pointing your domain name – will show you how to do just that.

Its as easy as that! How did you get on?

  • http://www.redsixty.com Ian

Is there a way of doing this without transfering our domain records to you?

  • admin

    Hi Ian,

Yes, all you need to do is log into the control panel of where your domain name is registered, and change the www ‘a’ record to 146.101.249.107

Then log into your WebEden site and add your domain name as a site address, under the ‘admin tools’.

Let me know if you have any problems!

Hi ive bought a domain name and did everything the video told me to do however when i go onto my website to change the info there it tells me that i have the wrong IP address?? Please help :0)

  • admin

    Hi Clare,

I am sorry you are having trouble with your domain name.

I have just looked into it and see that the site http://www.aquatechpipelines.com/
    is live and working.

If you wish to make changes to the site you will need to go to http://www.webeden.co.uk and sign in to your account and click on
    “Edit Site”.

If you need anymore please leave another post and i shall email you directly.

Hi I seem to be having a problem with the following demain name. When ever i go to it from my computer it will direct me to go daddy’s web page. The other problem that i have is i cant seem to edit the title text (where it says insert text here)

    Thanks

  • admin

    Hi Sam,

    Are you talking about ourvantour.com?

Did you register it with goDaddy? Fo you want to point it to your webeden.co.uk website? If so, you need to log in to your GoDaddy control panel and point the domain to the IP address 146.101.249.107.

Then you need to log into your Webeden control panel, go to the admin menu and then choose ‘site address’, and you type in your domain name http://www.ourvantour.com.

Good luck, please let me know if you have problems.

    Hi Steve,

I think its going to be easier if we sort it out over the phone, as there might be a couple of things we need to check – if we have the conversation on the blog it could take days!

Please can you call us on 0845 026 1045 and ask for ‘Ray’?

    Good morning!

I built our new website on here last Tuesday (very impressed by the website tools) and followed all of the instructions provided to point my domain name to the new site. On Saturday the website started to point to the webeden site and then reverted back to the old website host. It then changed again yesterday evening and Ive checked again this morning and again its reverted back to the old web host.

Do you know whats going on here? It says everywhere that it takes 72 hours but its been a lot longer than this now and the transfer domain option status is still pending. Am I doing something wrong?? Getting a bit desperate as announced our new website launch and now we have no website at all that people can access!!

Thanks in advance for your help
    NIcky

  • admin

    Hi Nicky,

Before we get into the nitty gritty of pointing a domain name / transfering a domain name, is this problem now sorted? I just checked iceparties.co.uk and it all appears to be OK?

When you were looking at the website, were you looking at it from different computers, or the same one each time? If it was different ones, it may be that that actual PC had stored an old version of the site. This is something that PCs do to save time – its called ‘caching’.

If you want the latest and most up to date version of your website, then you need press F5 when you are looking at your website.

Please let me know if everything is now OK!

    Hi Ken,

Thanks for getting back to me – the problem does seem to have rectified itself now, although the status on the manage domain names still says pending.. Hopefully this will change soon.

    Good Morning,

i recently changed my website and updated it and wanted to use the same domain i was previously using. i pointed the domain 3 days ago and still as yet there is no change. any help would be good?

  • admin

    Hi Tom,

Were you pointing your domain to an old WebEden website, and now you want to point it to a new WebEden website?

If so, have you deleted the domain from the ‘site address’ in the admin menu for your old WebEden website? If not, can you do this? The problem might be that you’re asking the domain to point at two different websites.

If this isn’t the case, please let me know.

    Hi,

I would like to point my website registered with you to another hosting provider. I’ve got details of new ns1 and ns2 servers, but I don’t see option to edit them in my account. How do I do that?

We can change the ns1 and ns2 for you. Can you send a mail to ken@webeden.net and we’ll get it sorted.

    Hello there,

I bought my domain name at 123reg, and changed the ‘a’ record today (at: control panel – modify domain – manage DNS – and substituted the www ‘a’ name). On my webeden site, the message still says ‘wrong IP address’, and 123reg says ‘domain not on our nameservers’ – is this all correct? Do I just sit tight now, or have I something else to do?

    Cheers

  • admin

    Hi Belinda,

Have you also logged into your WebEden site and added your domain name as a site address, under the ‘admin tools’?

  • http://www.jpjcomputers.webeden.co.uk John

    Dear All

My purchased domain (from Webeden) of http://www.jpjcomputers.co.uk ON 13/8/09 and it had a “pending status” for approx 72hrs, which has now changed to “setup instructions” with a warning triangle, stating that my new domains DNS “A” record has to be set to 146.101.249.107

When will Webeden point my purchased domains “A” record to 146.101.249.107 ????

Note: My ISP is “Virgin Media”.

I am currently using the free webeden address of
    http://www.jpjcomputers.webeden.co.uk

Q: Do I get “5” free e-mails (since I’ve purchased the domain http://www.jpjcomputers.co.uk ) with the with the suffix

    @jpjcomputers.co.uk ???

    e.g. support@jpjcomputers.co.uk

Q: I’ve also noticed that webeden also refer to my purchased domain of…

    http://www.jpjcomputers.co.uk
    as
    jpjcomputers.co.uk

and both are shown as my site addresses. Are these both the same??

Q: Do I select (“add”) both of these domain names once webeden has sorted out my “A” record to point to 146.101.249.107 ???

    Best regards
    John

  • admin

    Hi John,

Q1: I just checked your domain jpjcomputers.co.uk and it looks like it is already pointing towards your free webeden website jpjcomputers.webeden.co.uk.

Q2: Yes, you get 5 free email addresses with your domain. So you can send and receive email with 5 different names @jpjcomputers.co.uk

Q3. Yes, its the same with and without the www.

Q4: I don’t think you need to select these as they are both already pointing to your jpjcomputers.webeden.co.uk website.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

  • Natalya

    Hi Ken,

I bought my domain names (mydomain.com, mydomain.co.uk and my-domain.co.uk) at 123reg. I added WWW ‘A’ record at control panel – modify domain – manage DNS for each domain (Should I add @ ‘A’ record?) and I added my domain names as a site address into my WebEden site.
Also I set up one website address (www.mydomain.com) as a single reference point. (under Admin tools into WebEden site).

    Q. Why when I type in mydomain.com or other my domain names it goes to 123-reg.co.uk?

p.s. its been longer than 72 hours now

  • admin

    Hi Natalya,

It sounds like you’ve done it all right: Can I just check that these are the changes you made?

    1. Change your DNS ‘A’ record for your domain to 146.101.249.107
    2. Add your domain name as a site address here:
Admin -> Site address -> add your website address.

    Is that right?

Have you done this for multiple domains or just 1?

    Ken

  • Natalya

    Hi Ken,

Yes, I have done this for multiple domain, but still got problem. . .

  • Natalya

    Hi Ken again

I think I resolved this problem. Here massage from 123-reg support:

“I can confirm the reason why your website is not being displayed is because you have added 2 www and 2 @ records forwarding to 2 different IP addresses.
Please ensure you delete one of these www and @ records in order for you site to be displayed.”

    Simple :)

    Thank you anyway!

  • Jayne

    Hi Ken,
    me again.
I have followed your instructions and managed to point my domain (held by another supplier) to my webeden address and it apears to work.
I just wondered why it dosent display the “www” in the address bar ? it there any way I can get it to show the www?
    thanks
    Jayne.

  • admin

    Hi Jayne,

When you add your domain name under ‘site addresses’ in the webeden control panel, you need to add it both with the ‘www’ and without the ‘www’. That should sort it so you have the option of either.

    Thanks,
    Ken

    Hi Ken,

  • http://www.ipmdesigns.co.uk Ian Marshall

Hi I recently purchased a domain name via yourselves and have also created two websites on my account, When i view my websites in my account mode the domian name point to the right website. However when I type in the domain name (ipmdesigns.co.uk) is takes me to the other website I have set up.

    Can you please advise ???

    many thanks

  • admin

    Hi Ian,

I can see that http://www.ipmdesigns.co.uk/ points to one website and that ipmdesigns.co.uk/ (without the www) points to the other.

Add your domain name as a site address here:
Admin -> Site address -> add your website address.

add it for the site address that’s right, both with the www and without.

    That should sort it!

    Ken

  • admin

    Hi Jayne,

The reason that the domain hasn’t transferred is that the IPSTAG has not been changed to GANDI.

The IPSTAG needs to be changed at the previous registrar to GANDI.

Please let me know if you have any other problems.

    Hi Ken

My main address is as above, but I also have frenchcountryantiques.co.uk and antiquepaintedfurniture.co.uk both of which I have mirrored to the deja site. They have all been set up with google webtools and been verified but when searching google neither of them appear. On my old site I had 4 gathering names all of which routed to dejavulostwithiel.co.uk and all could be found in google, normally on the first page when typing in antique painted or french furniture. What do I need to do, I at a loss.
    Thanks

    Adrian

  • admin

    Hi Adrian,

    This is an interesting problem.

First of all, Google has definately indexed both renchcountryantiques.co.uk and antiquepaintedfurniture.co.uk becauseif you search for those domains they appear in search engines results page.

However, I think that the problem here is that the content of all 3 websites are almost identical. Google will therefore consider 1 of the websites as the main version, and ignore or even exclude the other two.

If the unique elements of a website is an exact copy of another website, that websites’ value will often be deeply discounted or even removed from the Google listings.

The reason that Google ignore duplicate content is because if they didn’t then its possible to conceive that a single company could provide all the results for a specific search query, and that wouldn’t give the user much choice about who to deal with.

Here’s what Google say about it: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=66359

To get over this, I’d recommend having unique content for each website, and to focus on different areas.

Hope that helps, please let me know how you get on.

    Ken

  • http://www.alisoncross.webeden.co.uk Alison Cross

Adrian – Would it help, if the sites are almost identical, is stress the ‘antique’ keywords for one site and ‘paint’ keywords for the other?

  • http://www.bathcityacademy.com/ paul

hi, i have been asked to develope a site for bath city academy and have been given the details of this account, i want to use the domain names they bought for another site i have made and point them there…. please can you tel me how to do this.

    Regards
    Paul

  • admin

    Hi Paul,

You can point the domain names that they bought for another website and point them to the one that you build with WebEden.

All you need to do is:

    1. Log into the control panel of the company where your domains are registered.
    2. Change the settings of your domain so the DNS ‘A’ record says 146.101.249.107
    3. Log into your WebEden control panel and add your domain name as a site address here:
Admin -> Site address -> add your website address.

    And that’s it.

The alternative is to transfer the domain name into your WebEden account. PLease let me know if you’d like to do that I and I can show you how.

    Thanks!
    Ken

  • http://www.platinumtears1.webeden.co.uk ruth henry

I have been trying to transfer the domain to you and want to hurry it up i have pointed the http://www.platinumtears.com to you but it still not working please advise i am losing rankings by the minute

  • admin

    Hi Ruth,

I see your domain platinumtears.com is registered by Homestead.

    Are you trying to

    A. Transfer the domain into your webeden control panel, and then point it at your website?

    B. Leaving your website at homestead.com and pointing it at your new webeden website?

If its A. then you need to:

    1. Unlock – check with your current provider that the domain is unlocked and available for transfer

    2. Email access – also check with your current provider what email address is registered against your domain. If necessary, change it.

    3. Auth Code – request an Auth code (authorisation code) from your current domain name provider. You must get this before starting the process as you will be asked for this during the transfer process. And try to copy and paste it to ensure there are no ‘typos’

    3. Once you have these, go to http://www.webeden.co.uk/domain-names.htm and follow the process.

    4. Contact Details – ensure that the contact details you give us are the same ones as you you provide in our domains module match those held by your current provider

    5. Email action – Once you receive the confirmation email from Gandi (our registrar) you must take action – reply to the email, in plain text, changing only the body of the email i.e. removing everything in the email body except the transfer code (code…/ACCEPT)

    If its B. then:

    1. Log into the control panel of the company where your domains are registered.
    2. Change the settings of your domain so the DNS ‘A’ record says 146.101.249.107
    3. Log into your WebEden control panel and add your domain name as a site address here:
Admin -> Site address -> add your website address.

If you could let me know which route you’re taking it will help us solve this problem.

    Thanks,
    Ken

    • MikeG

146.101.249.107 says it is moonfruit.com – have you you changed your address? I want to keep my URL with existing supplier and point it via its Nameserver management page to my WebEden delevloped site. Thanks for any help you can give. Mike G

  • http://www.18tolifetattoo.com Guy

    Hello Ken

Im having real problems. I have put in for a domain transfer TO webeden from Justhost. Justhost have confirmed that the domain http://WWW.18TOLIFETATTOO.COM is unlocked and have provided the EPP code which i have used with webeden and the one voucher i received when i signed up..

Now, the status has said “Pending” for a week now on my domains section of this site, and i would like to know if it is possible for me to at least redirect FROM Justhost until the transfer finally goes through?

I have access to change the DNS settings, but do not know what to change them to??

    Thankyou

    Guy

  • admin

    Hi Guy,

I just checked our domains control panel and it says that it failed because:

“clumsy_birdman@hotmail.com has not replied before the deadline”.

The registrar we use for domain registration is called ‘Gandi’. You should have received an email from Gandi and justhost asking you to confirm the transfer.

Did you not recieve one? Might it have got into a junk folder?

Unfortunately this means that you have to start the transfer process again. You might need another EPP code for that from Justhost.

We’ll sort this out, its just a fiddly process.

  • http://transmissionsfromthevoid James B

    Afternoon Ken,
I am attempting to transfer my domain name from GoDaddy (www.transmissionsfromthevoid.com) to my Web Eden site. I have changed the (first) A record to 146.101.249.107. I only did it an hour or so ago so im not expecting it to change yet. However under the Go Daddy control panel there were infact 3 ‘A’ records listed. I added a new record and typed in the desired IP address. Is this enough or do i have to change all 3 or delete them?

    Cheers

  • Ray

    Hi James,

If their are various A records the one you need to change is the WWW A record.

Sometimes there is a WWW CNAME record instead of a WWW A record. So you would need to delete the WWW CNAME record and create the WWW A record with that ip address.

If you do not have any other services with GoDaddy you can always transfer your domain to your webeden account.

    Is transferring an option?

    Ray

  • http://transmissionsfromthevoid James B

    Morning Ray,
Thanks for your response. I am presently trying to transfer the domain to Webeden. I unlocked the domain with GoDaddy on Tuesday however when i go to transfer the domain within admin it still says that my domain is locked. How longs does it normally take to filter through?

    Cheers

  • Ray

    Hi James,

It should be pretty fast at most a day or 2.

You will have to get in touch with GoDaddy direct and ask them to make sure the domain is unlocked.

Unfortunately i am not too clued up with the GoDaddy interface so i do not know the best course of action to get in touch with them. But hopefully on their site somewhere they have a telephone number for you to call them.

Once the domain is unlocked it should be a very quick process.

    Hope that helps…

    Hi Guys,

    Hi Guys,

Might be a silly question but here goes…. i have got a webeden account that i have built a few sites with but is there any way i can transfer a site and domain from one webeden account to another?

    Hi Sean,

Yes, you can transfer it all into 1 account, but the support people need to do that for you – can you send a support query?

Lemme know how you get on.

  • http://www.miseeireband.net Mise Eire

    Hello,

I requested that my domain name be transfered to webeden on the 10th of June and paid money for it to be done. In my domains account it says that the status is pending. My domain is present in the admin area but it says that there is a problem as it does not recognise the IP address at the ‘A’ record. I cannot change this at the control panel of the company that has it registered, which I think is Ghandi, as they have not supplied me with a password to access the site.

Can anybody help me get the ‘A’ record IP address sorted?

    Thanks
    Patrick

  • Ray

    Hi Patrick,

I can see that the domain name transfer has failed. This is due to the contact on domain not accepting the transfer.

I have restarted the transfer for you and you need to login to the email address paddyrooney@irishnation.com and accept the transfer in order for it to go through.

    I hope that helps

    Hey!

I am trying to integrate an appointment booking system on my site – so far, so good, I’ve found a great host.

Now – I’ve seen on the appointment booking site where I can use my own domain name as part of the address instead of the hosting name (which would be *super*), and they’re asking me for something called a ‘CNAME’ – please can you let me know where I can obtain the CNAME for my website address as I would love my appointment booking system to look waaay flash :-)

    Thanks!

    Hi
I set up my website on Webeden and bought a domain name through Webeden – whilst your site explains how to point the A record for another domain name provider, it doesn’t say what you need to do if Webeden supplied the domain name. Do I need to change the A record and if so how do I do that for a domain purchased through Webeden. thanks

  • Ray

    Hi Richard,

If you wish to point the domain away that is not a problem but you will need to email tech support for them to do that.

Click support at the top of the page and submit a query and they shall point it for you.

    Hope that helps

  • http://www.todokinesio.com Thomas Paterson

Hi, I have two domains with webeden, http://www.patersondominguez.com and http://www.todokinesio.com and I have pointed both to the same webeden site “patersondominguez”. This is temporary while we migrate from one business name to the other – but during this time I want the one site to be available under both URLs. This works, but…

When entering the URL “www.todokinesio.com” to open the website in an internet search engine, the patersondominguez site opens correctly, but the URL displayed is “www.patersondominguez.com”, and not “www.todokinesio.com”.

Google Adwords have suspended my advertising for http://www.todokinesio.com because of this – the URL of the website that opens after clicking the GoogleAd is not http://www.todokinesio.com as advertised, but http://www.patersondominguez.com….

When the site page opens, I want the URL shown in the search engine URL bar to correspond with the URL actually keyed, or clicked in GoogleAdwords.

    Help, please!

    Regards

    Tom

  • Ray

    Hi Tom,

This is due to you having a preferred address.

You need to login to your site go to ADMIN on your toolbar and then SITE ADDRESS and you will see a list of your addresses pointing to the site.

Just underneath it will say Preferred address if you click the drop down box and choose none when someone goes to each domain they will see the same site but have there own URL.

    Hope that helps

  • Ray

@gaworld, I can see your domain is pointing to the right place just not to your site.

Please email me with your login details and i shall go in and take a look for you.

    Hi,

I have managed to point the domain name I bought to my webeden domain name, but when I go to my webeden site and click on edit there is no option to manage site so I can’t see if the new name is pending. Very confused.

  • Ray

@martine, If you have pointed the domain then you will need to go to your sites toolbar and go to ADMIN and then site addresses. There you will need to type in your domain name and that is it. If you need any further help you can email me your login details to ray@webeden.org and i can do this for you.

Could you email me ay ray@webeden.org with as many details as possible and i shall get the tech team to rectify this for you :-)

I purchased the domain name however on the webeden.co.uk site it just says “status is pending” and won’t let me point it. If I try to do it directly from my website through the admin button I get a message saying it cannot be used as a prefered domain name as it has been set up incorrectly although I set it up as instructed in the tutorial. How can I get this to work?
